The Heralds of the Gospel are a particular blessing and boon to St. Patrick's Parish.

Members assist at Mass and in the Rectory. Applying their initiative toward completing the sorts of tasks which inevitably remain undone at a busy parish, their creativity, ingenuity and skill also is evidenced by the gracenotes of beauty and function they've contributed during this time of renovation and general improvement.

It's always the little things which mean so much ... like the elegant, custom rack they fashioned to hold the literature, flyers and Catholic teaching on human life, marriage, contraception, euthanasia and the sacraments we make available in the vestibule.

If you have the opportunity, please introduce yourself and take a moment to please remind them how grateful we are to have them here at St. Patrick's Church. A few quick links within their website include:

Emblem of the Heralds of the GospelIt is easy to discern the Heralds of the Gospel -- in their brown tunics and black boots -- from the rest of the acolytes at Mass.

At the Rectory or on the street, you will recognize them by the emblem they wear always which expresses the Eucharist, Mary and the See of Peter.

These are the three pillars of the spirituality of the herald of the Gospel.

Charism of the Heralds of the Gospel ...

The present state of this institution is a result of a long journey. Looking back, through the years and the decades, one can affirm almost step-by-step the providential nature of the path followed. Almost imperceptibly, the hand of Providence was guiding them throughout their journey that culminated in the recent pontifical approval.

The designs of God are unfathomable. Some He converts in a efficacious manner, as swift as lightning, as in the case of St. Paul. While with others He waits patiently for many years, leaving them to walk along the tortuous paths of life until at a determinate moment He invites them irresistibly to sanctity. Such was the case of St. Augustine

Providence also has its mysterious designs for the Heralds of the Gospel. Its origins can be traced back to the middle of the past century, when a group of young men came together in São Paulo, to admire the harmony and cultivate the spirituality that emanates from Gregorian chant, in the midst of studies about Catholic doctrine.

In this way Providence was inviting them to give themselves entirely to the true Author of all pulchritude. At the same time, the Holy Spirit raised up in their souls the desire to form an institution of a religious nature, whose goal was to promote personal sanctification, while utilizing music, and culture in general, as a means of evangelization.

A Herald of the Gospel at prayer ... from the Heralds of the Gospel websiteAt a certain moment, the reading of the True Devotion to Mary, by St. Louis de Montfort, and the consecration to the Mother of God that all of them made, conferred a distinctly Marian note to the spirituality of the group, that little by little was forming and making explicit its own physiognomy.

The private association of the faithful finally came into being when Bishop Emilio Pignoli of Campo Limpo, Brazil, whose diocese includes an important part of the city of São Paulo, approved its statutes on September 21st, 1999. This was the beginning of a new stage of intensification in the ecclesial communion.

From this moment on the Heralds of the Gospel became living instruments of the Sacred Hierarchy at the service of the New Evangelization.

In the following months, the Heralds of the Gospel were canonically constituted in 25 dioceses of various countries in the Americas and Europe. Conditions were in place for a future request to the Holy See for the recognition as an international association of the faithful of pontifical right.

For its symbolism, the feast of the Chair of St. Peter (celebrated on February 22nd) was the date chosen for the signing of the decree of approval, as the devotion to the Pope is one of the pillars of the spirituality of the Heralds of the Gospel.

At the moment of their Pontifical establishment, they were already present in 29 countries of the three Americas, and in Europe, Africa and Asia, in such places as India, South Africa, Mozambique, the Philippines and Japan.

Encouraged by more than a thousand letters sent to them by prelates, priests and religious from around the world, the "Heralds of the Gospel" had their statutes approved by Bishop Emilio Pignoli from the Diocese of Campo Limpo (Brazil).

The Three Pillars

A herald of the Gospel is stimulated to a true practice of pulchrum as means to help in the formation of the will and the control of the passions. With the indispensable help of divine grace the transformations take place, engendering an almost instinctive reflex to always act with perfection, which will bring forth fruits in the activities of evangelization.

This Association… founded with the goal of being an instrument of sanctity in the Church, helping its members to respond generously to the call to the fullness of Christian life and the perfection of charity, favouring and encouraging the most intimate union between daily life and the faith.

... [T]he Association has as its goal the active, conscious and responsible participation of its members in the salvific mission of the Church through the apostolate, to which they are destined by the Lord, in virtue of baptism and confirmation. They should, therefore, act in favour of the evangelization, sanctification, and Christian animation of the temporal realities.

Thus, there are two dimensions in the vocation of the Heralds of the Gospel: one vertical, which speaks with respect to the relationship with God; and the other horizontal, or the obligation towards one's neighbour that translates into the evangelizing desire. The latter is a consequence of an intimate union with Christ, as the Holy Father well recalls in his luminous Apostolic Letter Novo Millennio Inuente:

"Without Me, you can do nothing" (Jn 15: 5).

The Apostolate of the Shrine has as its goal an active cooperation with the Bishops and Pastors in the apostolic work of the new evangelization, in response to the insistent appeals of Pope John Paul II — cooperate with the Bishops and pastors in the work of the new evangelization.

It aims to work especially so that lapsed Catholics will begin to participate in the ecclesial life of their parishes. In this work, the desire is to reach not only individuals, but above all the families, motivating them to play an important role in the community activities and basically consists of pilgrimages from home to home of an oratory of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, just as she appeared in Fatima.
